After a lot of research and miles on the road, Wooly
Comforts now has very high quality flocks of Cotswold and Rambouillet sheep.
Even though we raise our sheep for their wool, many of our ewes have done
well at local and national shows. Call us for lamb information.
The Rambouillet Breed
Rambouillets are large frame sheep that produce consistent fleeces of 20-22
microns. Their wool is extremely soft and are sheered twice a year with at
least 2 1/2" fleeces. We use our Rambouillet wool to produce our felted
products and for our art show merchandise.
Rambouillets came from Spain's famous Merino flocks that were exported to
France in the late 1700's by Louis XVI. They were called Rambouillet
Merinos. The farm, Bergerie Nationale, still raises these sheep today.
Our Rambouillets came from California and Iowa, where the breed tends to be
larger and have a finer fleece. Today, we have a thriving flock which has
just initiated breeding black-fleeced Rambouillets along with our white
Rambouillets.
The Cotswold Breed
Cotswolds are an attractive long wool breed which originated in Britain. It
had significant impact on the history of Great Britain for over 2000 years
by providing its production of wool and meat. Cotswolds are very hardy, are
low maintenance, have easy lambing, and have a docile attitude. The breed is
exceptional in wooded or hilly terrain.
Its wool grows prolifically and is sheered twice a year with up to 6"
fleeces. The fleeces are high in luster and are generally course. The wool
is particularly useful in our felted products. Its uses also extend to rug
wool, and loose-twist worsted spinning and weaving for throw rugs.
Our original Cotswolds came from Colorado from a farm that was similar in
terrain as ours….wooded and hilly. They are all multi-colored(silver, black,
and white) and produce fantastic fibers that enable our felted innersoles to
be long lasting and very durable.
Our farm continues to be the supplier of our raw materials that make our
products naturally unique.
